Reinforcing 公筷

Connection is build through the act of sharing. The use of serving plates, and serving chopsticks is apart of Chinese dining etiquette. With this project, I wanted to be able to create a sense of connectivity and unity through playful forms, while being able to reinforce a placement for communal serving chopsticks (公筷, gongkuai).

This form was modeled in Fusion 360, 3D printed, created through a one-part plaster mold, and slip cast with M370 clay.

Serving Chopsticks

Serving chopsticks (or “community-use chopsticks”) refers to chopsticks that are used to serve food from a shared dish to an individual's plate, they are used because of concerns about hygiene. As we are facing challenges from a global pandemic Covid-19, I designed this set of serving plates in order to implement the placement of serving chopsticks as a way to introduce it to different cultures or an act of encouragement to practice this in a home or community.
